Specialist & consultant level
Research leadership & publication
Senior psychiatrists, especially in universities, lead research, supervise students and publish findings. This builds the local evidence needed for Malaysian mental health care.
Depth by stage, Pre-U → Consultant (details)
What is it?
Every Master's trainee completes a dissertation, but at consultant level research becomes a leadership task: designing studies, obtaining grants and ethics approval, supervising postgraduate students and publishing.
University psychiatrists combine teaching, clinical work and research. MOH psychiatrists also do research, often through the National Medical Research Register and the Medical Research and Ethics Committee.
Local research is important because findings from other countries do not always apply to Malaysia's languages, cultures and health system.
Why does a psychiatrist need it?
Good care depends on evidence. Psychiatrists who lead research help answer local questions, such as how best to reach rural patients, which treatments work in local populations, and how culture affects illness.

Common questions
Do all psychiatrists do research?
All Malaysian Master's trainees complete a dissertation. After that, research is optional for many, but it is a core role for university psychiatrists.
Why is local research important?
Culture, language, religion and health systems affect mental illness and treatment, so evidence from Malaysia helps make care fit local needs.
