Specialist & consultant level
Service leadership & mental health policy
Consultant psychiatrists lead clinical teams, plan services and contribute to mental health policy. In Malaysia this can include heading departments, developing community services and advising the Ministry of Health.
Depth by stage, Pre-U → Consultant (details)
What is it?
As psychiatrists become senior, much of their impact comes from leading others. Heads of department manage staff, budgets, waiting times and quality, and represent psychiatry in hospital management.
Nationally, psychiatrists help shape mental health strategy and guidelines, for example through Ministry of Health committees, the Malaysian Psychiatric Association and work on national mental health plans.
Leadership also means advocacy: reducing stigma, improving access and working with NGOs, schools, religious bodies and employers.
Why does a psychiatrist need it?
Malaysia has a reported shortage of psychiatrists relative to its population, so services must be well organised to reach people. Psychiatrists who understand management and policy can make care fairer and more efficient.
