Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions families and students ask most about becoming a psychiatrist in Malaysia.

How long does it take to become a consultant psychiatrist in Malaysia?

Typically about 14–18 years from the end of SPM to being recognised as a specialist: 1–2 years of pre-university, 5 years of medical school, 2 years of housemanship, usually 1–3 years as a medical officer, about 4 years of specialist training and a supervised gazettement period. Consultant-level roles follow after several more years of specialist practice, and a subspecialty fellowship adds typically 2–3 years. Durations vary by person, programme and service needs.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist, a clinical psychologist and a counsellor in Malaysia?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed specialist training in psychiatry; they diagnose mental illness, look after physical health aspects, can prescribe medicine, order investigations, give ECT and use the Mental Health Act 2001. A clinical psychologist holds a postgraduate (typically master's level) degree in clinical psychology, does psychological assessment and therapy, does not prescribe, and is covered by the Allied Health Professions Act 2016. A registered counsellor is trained in counselling and is regulated under the Counsellors Act 1998 through the Lembaga Kaunselor; counsellors support people with life problems and emotional difficulties, and refer on when a mental illness needs medical care. The three often work together in the same team.

Is psychiatry part of the normal medical degree?

Yes. Every MMC-recognised medical programme includes behavioural science in the early years and a clinical psychiatry posting, usually of several weeks, in the clinical years. That gives a basic, generalist level of knowledge; specialist depth comes only with postgraduate training.

Do I need a psychology degree to become a psychiatrist?

No. The route to psychiatry is through medicine. A psychology or neuroscience background can help with understanding, but it does not replace the medical degree, housemanship and specialist training.

Which universities in Malaysia train psychiatrists?

Specialist training in psychiatry is offered as a master's programme (typically about four years) by public universities including Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia; the exact programme names differ. Check each university and the Ministry of Health for the current list and intake.

What is MRCPsych and can it be used in Malaysia?

MRCPsych is the membership examination of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK, made up of Paper A, Paper B and a clinical exam (CASC). Some Malaysian doctors sit it. Whether and how it counts towards specialist registration in Malaysia is decided by the National Specialist Register and the Ministry of Health, so check with them for the current position before choosing this route.

What is gazettement?

After passing the specialist qualification, a new specialist in the Ministry of Health typically works for a supervised period before being formally recognised (gazetted) as a specialist. Registration on the National Specialist Register is needed to practise and call oneself a specialist in Malaysia.

What does an awareness level mean on this site?

It is a simple guide to how deeply a subject is expected to be known at a stage: Aware (knows it exists and why it matters), Understands (can explain it and pass exams on it), Applies (uses it safely in patient care) and Masters / Teaches (expert, handles complex cases, teaches others). The levels are an educational estimate, not an official grading.

Is psychiatry a good career in Malaysia?

Malaysia is widely reported to have a shortage of psychiatrists, and demand for mental health care has grown. The work is varied (hospital, community, child, forensic, addiction, old age, liaison, private practice) and suits people who enjoy long conversations, complexity and continuity of care. The training is long and emotionally demanding, so it is worth trying a psychiatry posting before deciding.

Is this an official curriculum?

No. It is an independent educational overview drawn from published sources such as the Malaysian Medical Council, university programme information, the National Specialist Register and the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Always check those bodies for current requirements.
