Specialist & consultant level
Continuing professional development (CPD)
Continuing professional development (CPD) is the ongoing learning every doctor must do to stay up to date. In Malaysia, CPD activity is linked to renewal of the Annual Practising Certificate.
Depth by stage, Pre-U → Consultant (details)
What is it?
Medicine changes quickly. New medicines, guidelines and laws appear every year, so doctors must keep learning after their final examinations. CPD includes conferences, courses, journal reading, teaching, audits and online modules.
Malaysian doctors renew their Annual Practising Certificate (APC) with the Malaysian Medical Council each year, and CPD points are part of this process. The exact number of points and rules are set by the MMC and can change, so doctors should check the current requirements.
For specialists, CPD also supports continued specialist registration and professional standing.
Why does a psychiatrist need it?
Psychiatric treatments, classification systems (such as ICD-11) and laws evolve. CPD keeps psychiatrists safe and current, and shows the public they are maintaining their competence.
What level is expected at each stage?
