Medical officer years
Medical officer in psychiatry
Working as a medical officer in a psychiatry department is usually the first real psychiatric job. It is where a doctor learns psychiatric assessment in practice and tests whether the specialty is right for them.
Depth by stage, Pre-U → Consultant (details)
What is it?
A psychiatry MO works in hospital psychiatric wards, outpatient clinics, the emergency department and sometimes community teams. They assess new patients, review those on the ward, adjust medicines and see referrals from other departments.
Psychiatric departments exist in many state and district hospitals, and there are also dedicated psychiatric hospitals such as Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta and Hospital Permai. The MO learns how the Mental Health Act 2001 is used in practice: admissions, reviews and leave.
Experience as a psychiatry MO is typically valued, and sometimes expected, when applying for Master of Medicine (Psychiatry) training. Check current entry rules.
Why does a psychiatrist need it?
This is the bridge between general medicine and psychiatry. The MO gains hands-on experience in interviewing, mental state examination, risk assessment and prescribing, which the specialist training builds on.
