What is it?

The Master of Medicine (Psychiatry) is offered by public universities including UM, UKM, USM and UPM; the exact programme name differs slightly between universities. Entry rules change over time and differ by sponsor, so applicants should always check the current requirements.

Typical requirements include full registration with the Malaysian Medical Council, a valid Annual Practising Certificate, a period of post-housemanship service, and often prior psychiatry experience. Applicants usually sit an entrance examination or assessment and attend an interview. Many trainees are sponsored by the Ministry of Health (for example through Hadiah Latihan Persekutuan), which comes with a service bond.

Some doctors also take the MRCPsych examinations of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Eligibility for each part is set by the College, and recognition for Malaysian specialist registration is decided by the National Specialist Register specialty committee.

Why does a psychiatrist need it?

This is the gateway to becoming a psychiatrist. Good preparation in basic sciences and clinical psychiatry not only helps to pass entry, it also prepares the doctor for the Part I examination in the first year of training.
