Medical officer years

Medical officer: general clinical work

As a medical officer, a doctor works more independently, handles on-call alone with a specialist at the end of the phone, and supervises house officers. This builds the clinical confidence expected before specialist training.

Depth by stage, Pre-U → Consultant (details)

What is it?

After housemanship and full registration, a doctor becomes a medical officer (MO). MOs may work in hospitals, district hospitals or health clinics, often posted by the Ministry of Health according to service needs.

The MO makes first-line decisions, runs clinics, admits and discharges patients, and leads the junior team on call. Specialists remain responsible and available, but the MO is trusted with much more.

This is also when doctors decide on a specialty. Those aiming for psychiatry often seek a posting in a psychiatry department to gain experience before applying for training.

Why does a psychiatrist need it?

Specialist training assumes the doctor already works safely and independently. MO years give the judgement, time management and leadership that a psychiatry trainee needs from day one, and they show whether psychiatry really suits the doctor.
