Pre-clinical medicine

Community medicine & public health

Community medicine (public health) focuses on the health of whole populations rather than individual patients: prevention, health services, environmental and occupational health. It shows how mental health fits into national health planning.

Depth by stage, Pre-U → Consultant (details)

What is it?

Community medicine teaches prevention at different levels, health promotion, environmental and occupational health, nutrition, maternal and child health, communicable and non-communicable disease control, and how health systems are organised and financed.

Malaysian students learn the structure of the national health system: Ministry of Health hospitals and health clinics (klinik kesihatan), primary care, and private sector care.

Many schools include community postings, family health surveys or projects in rural areas.

Why does a psychiatrist need it?

Mental illness is one of the largest causes of disability worldwide. Public health thinking helps psychiatrists plan services, prevent illness (for example suicide prevention and early intervention in psychosis), reduce stigma and work with primary care. Malaysia's community mental health services, including mental health care in health clinics, rely on these principles.

Common questions

How does public health relate to psychiatry?

Public health looks at mental illness across the whole population: how common it is, who is at risk and how to prevent it. Psychiatrists use this when planning services and prevention programmes.

Do medical students go into the community?

Yes. Most Malaysian medical schools include community postings, visits to health clinics, or household surveys as part of community medicine.
