Housemanship postings
Housemanship: emergency medicine & other postings
Besides the main postings, house officers usually rotate through emergency medicine or another assigned department such as anaesthesiology or primary care. Emergency work in particular trains rapid assessment, which is central to emergency psychiatry.

What is it?
Housemanship in Malaysia typically includes one further posting beyond medicine, surgery, O&G, paediatrics and orthopaedics. Commonly this is emergency medicine, but it may be anaesthesiology, primary care or another department depending on current rules and hospital needs.
In the emergency department the house officer triages and treats patients of every age with every kind of problem, from chest pain to road accidents. Decisions have to be made quickly and safely, often with incomplete information.
Some doctors also gain exposure to psychiatry during housemanship through on-call or specific arrangements, but psychiatry is not usually a core housemanship posting. Check current MOH guidelines.
Why does a psychiatrist need it?
Many psychiatric crises arrive through the emergency department: overdoses, agitation, acute psychosis and suicidal patients. A psychiatrist must judge whether a patient is medically safe, work with emergency staff, and manage agitation without harm.

Common questions
Is there a psychiatry posting in Malaysian housemanship?
Psychiatry is not typically a core housemanship posting. Most doctors gain serious psychiatry experience as medical officers. Current arrangements can change, so check Ministry of Health guidelines.
Why is emergency medicine useful for psychiatrists?
It teaches rapid, safe decision-making with very sick patients. Psychiatric emergencies often overlap with medical ones such as overdose and intoxication.
