Pre-university sciences
Biology
Pre-university biology is the study of living things, from cells to whole organisms. It is the foundation for almost everything in medical school, and later for understanding how the brain and body produce thoughts, moods and behaviour.
Depth by stage, Pre-U → Consultant (details)
What is it?
Biology at SPM and pre-university level (matriculation, foundation, STPM or A-levels) covers how cells work, how genes are passed on, how organs and body systems keep us alive, and how living things interact with their environment.
For a student heading towards medicine it is the most directly useful school science. Topics such as cell structure, DNA, the nervous system, hormones and homeostasis come back again in the first year of medical school, in far more detail.
Medical schools treat a strong pass in biology as essential. Most programmes in Malaysia require it, together with chemistry and either physics or mathematics, at a high grade.
Why does a psychiatrist need it?
A psychiatrist treats disorders that live in the brain, which is a biological organ. Understanding neurons, synapses, hormones such as cortisol and thyroid hormone, and how genes and environment interact begins with school biology. It also helps a student follow later subjects like physiology, genetics and neuroscience without struggling with the basics.
What level is expected at each stage?
Scale: 1. Aware → 2. Understands → 3. Applies → 4. Masters / Teaches. What the levels mean.
- Pre-UAppliesApplies biology confidently in exam questions and practical work; this is the main working level for the subject.
- Pre-clinicalUnderstandsSchool biology is absorbed into anatomy, physiology and biochemistry; the student understands the basics well enough to build on them.
- ClinicalAwareRarely revisited directly; basic concepts sit in the background of clinical reasoning.
- HousemanshipAwareBackground knowledge only.
- Medical officerAwareBackground knowledge only.
- Psych traineeAwareBasic cell and nervous system biology resurfaces as part of neuroscience for psychiatry examinations.
- Specialist / consultantAwareBackground knowledge, mostly used when explaining illness to patients and families.
What are the key topics?
Cells and molecules
- Cell structure: membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum
- Movement across membranes: diffusion, osmosis, active transport
- Enzymes and how temperature and pH affect them
- Cell division: mitosis and meiosis
- Basic biochemistry of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins
Genetics and inheritance
- DNA structure, replication and the genetic code
- Protein synthesis: transcription and translation
- Mendelian inheritance, dominant and recessive traits
- Sex-linked inheritance and pedigree charts
- Mutation and variation; introduction to genetic engineering
Human body systems
- Circulatory and respiratory systems
- Digestion and nutrition
- Excretion, the kidney and water balance
- Reproduction and development
- Homeostasis and negative feedback
Nervous and endocrine systems
- Structure of the neuron; resting and action potentials (basic level)
- Synapses and neurotransmitters
- Reflex arcs, brain and spinal cord (outline)
- Hormones: insulin, adrenaline, thyroid hormone, reproductive hormones
- How nerves and hormones work together to control the body
Health, disease and ecology
- Pathogens and the immune response (introduction)
- Lifestyle and non-communicable disease
- Drugs and their effects on the body (introduction)
- Ecology, populations and the environment
How is it learned and assessed?
- Classroom teaching and practical laboratory work
- Experiments with written reports (practical assessment varies by programme)
- SPM Biology, then matriculation, foundation, STPM or A-level Biology examinations
- Grades feed directly into university admission scores
Typical textbooks and resources
- Ministry of Education SPM Biology textbooks (Form 4 and 5) — the core national texts
- STPM Biology reference books from Malaysian publishers — widely used for revision
- Campbell Biology — Urry, Cain and others (Pearson); a standard university-level text useful for strong students
- Cambridge International AS & A Level Biology coursebook — Cambridge University Press; for A-level students
Titles are widely used examples; editions change. Use university libraries or legitimate purchases.
Common questions
Is biology compulsory for medicine in Malaysia?
For practically all medical programmes, yes. Biology and chemistry are usually both required at a high grade, together with physics or mathematics. The exact combination and grades are set by each university within Malaysian Medical Council minimums, so check the current requirements.
How much school biology does a psychiatrist really use?
Directly, very little after the first years. Indirectly, a great deal: brain cells, hormones and genes are the starting point for understanding how medicines work and why some mental illnesses run in families.
