3. Addition & Subtraction
PrimaryAddition puts amounts together; subtraction takes an amount away. With a number line and a little practice with carrying and borrowing, you can add and subtract numbers with two digits or more.
Putting together and taking away
Addition (symbol +) combines two groups into one total. Subtraction (symbol −) finds what is left, or the difference between two amounts. They undo each other — if 7 + 5 = 12, then 12 − 5 = 7 and 12 − 7 = 5. Those four facts together are called a fact family.
On a number line, adding means moving right; subtracting means moving left. For bigger numbers, we add and subtract column by column (ones, then tens): carrying happens when the ones add up to 10 or more, and borrowing happens when you don't have enough ones to subtract, so you trade in a ten.
Why carrying and borrowing work
Ten ones always make exactly one ten. When adding, if your ones column reaches 10 or more, you trade 10 of those ones for one new ten and carry it into the tens column — nothing is lost, it is just repackaged.
Borrowing is the same trade in reverse: if the ones column doesn't have enough to subtract, you break one ten from the tens column back into 10 ones, giving you enough to subtract from. The total amount never changes — only how it's grouped.
Worked example: carrying and borrowing
Add 48 + 27.
- Add the ones: 8 + 7 = 15. Write 5, carry 1 ten.
- Add the tens: 4 + 2 + 1(carried) = 7.
- Answer: 75.
Subtract 62 − 35.
- Ones column: 2 − 5 can't be done, so borrow a ten. Tens become 5, ones become 12.
- 12 − 5 = 7.
- Tens column: 5 − 3 = 2.
- Answer: 27. Check: 27 + 35 = 62. ✓

6 + 8 = 14, 8 + 6 = 14, 14 − 6 = 8, and 14 − 8 = 6 — four facts built from the same three numbers.
Why do we "carry" a 1 when adding?
Because ten ones are worth exactly one ten. Once the ones column reaches 10 or more, that group of ten must be moved into the tens column so every digit still means the right amount.
What is 100 − 47?
53. Borrowing across the zeros: think of 100 as 9 tens and 10 ones. 10 − 7 = 3 ones, 9 − 4 = 5 tens, giving 53. Check: 53 + 47 = 100. ✓
Does order matter in subtraction the way it doesn't in addition?
Yes. Addition is commutative — 5 + 2 = 2 + 5. Subtraction is not: 5 − 2 = 3, but 2 − 5 gives a negative number, a completely different answer.
