PrimaryWater and materials have their own special jobs
Water is one of the most important materials on Earth. It's a liquid at the temperatures we live in, it can dissolve lots of things (like salt and sugar), plants and animals need it to live, and it can be a solid (ice) or a gas (steam) too.
Different materials are chosen for different jobs because of their properties — the way they look, feel, and behave:
- Metal — hard, shiny, good at carrying heat (that's why pots are metal).
- Plastic — light, doesn't carry heat well, can be moulded into shapes (good for handles).
- Glass — see-through, but breaks if dropped.
- Wood — doesn't carry heat well either, and floats on water.
Choosing the right material for the right job — and knowing which materials and liquids can be hot, sharp, or dangerous — is part of what makes a kitchen a place where you should always have a grown-up nearby.
Why a metal pot handle stays cool with a plastic grip
Have you noticed a cooking pot is often metal, but its handle is plastic or wood? Metal is great at moving heat quickly from the stove into your food — that's exactly why the pot itself is metal. But that same quick heat-moving would make an all-metal handle scorching hot to touch! Plastic and wood are much slower at moving heat, so the handle stays cool enough to grip safely while the rest of the pot does its hot job.
This is a real example of how chemists and engineers pick materials on purpose, based on their properties, to make everyday things — including kitchens — work well and stay safe.
Try it — a materials and safety walk in the kitchen
With a grown-up, walk through the kitchen (without touching the stove or any sharp tools).
- Point at three different objects and guess their material: metal, plastic, glass, or wood.
- Ask your grown-up to confirm — were you right?
- Find the stove, the knives, and anything hot or sharp, and just point to them (don't touch!). These are grown-ups-only tools.
- Talk about one safety rule for each: never touch a hot pan without a grown-up and an oven mitt; never pick up a knife without permission; always ask before turning on the stove or microwave.
- Finish by naming one job water does in the kitchen (washing, boiling pasta, mixing a drink).
Hot stoves, sharp knives, and boiling water can hurt you badly. In a real kitchen, always have a grown-up with you, never touch the stove or blades on your own, and ask before touching anything you're not sure about.
Why are cooking pots usually made of metal?
Metal is very good at carrying heat quickly from the stove into the food inside the pot, so food cooks properly and evenly.
Why is it dangerous to touch a pot straight from the stove without an oven mitt?
Because metal carries heat so well, the whole pot — not just the food — gets very hot. An oven mitt is made of thick material that carries heat slowly, protecting your hand long enough to move the pot safely.
