The world is full of millions of different animals and plants. Scientists sort them into groups by looking at what features they share — and once you know the groups, you can identify almost anything you meet outdoors.

Parts of a plant

  • Roots — anchor the plant in soil and soak up water and minerals.
  • Stem — holds the plant up and carries water and food up and down inside it.
  • Leaves — catch sunlight to make the plant's food.
  • Flowers — make seeds, often with the help of insects like bees.
2 Explanation

Why do we sort living things into groups?

Imagine a library with thousands of books thrown in one giant pile — you'd never find the one you wanted! Sorting books onto labelled shelves makes them easy to find and compare. Scientists sort animals and plants the same way: by grouping things that share important features, it becomes much easier to describe, compare, and learn about the millions of species on Earth. A bat has fur and feeds its babies milk, so even though it flies like a bird, we know from its features that it belongs with the mammals.

Look at the clues, not just the looks

A dolphin looks a bit like a fish and lives in water, but it breathes air, has a bit of hair, and feeds its babies milk — so it's a mammal, not a fish. Always check the real clues!

3 Practical

Activity: backyard or park nature survey

  1. Prepare a tally chart. Make columns for Mammal, Bird, Fish, Reptile, Insect and Plant.
  2. Go outside. Spend 15 minutes in a garden, park or even looking out of a window.
  3. Spot and sort. Every time you see a living thing, decide which group it belongs to and add a tally mark.
  4. Total it up. Count each column. Which group did you see the most of? The least?
  5. Explain your thinking. For one animal you saw, say out loud which clue told you its group (feathers? six legs? fur?).

Q1 Is a spider an insect?

No! This is a very common mix-up. Insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts, but a spider has 8 legs and only 2 body parts. Spiders belong to their own group, called arachnids, not insects.

Q2 Why don't fish drown underwater the way a person would?

Fish have gills instead of lungs. Gills can pull the oxygen that is dissolved in water directly into the fish's blood, so a fish can "breathe" underwater. A person only has lungs, which need to breathe air, not water.

Q3 What job do a plant's roots do, and why is that important?

Roots do two jobs: they hold the plant firmly in the soil so wind can't blow it away, and they soak up water and minerals from the soil, which travel up the stem to the leaves. Without roots, a plant could not get the water it needs or stay standing.

Q4 Do all plants grow flowers?

No. Most familiar plants (like sunflowers and apple trees) do grow flowers, but some plants — like ferns and mosses — never make flowers at all. They make new plants in other ways instead.
