What a constellation really is

A constellation is a pattern that people imagine by connecting bright stars, like connect-the-dots — a bear, a hunter, a queen. Astronomers officially recognize 88 constellations that map out the whole sky.

Important: the stars in a constellation usually are not actually close to each other in space — they just happen to line up when viewed from Earth. Two stars that look like neighbours in the Big Dipper might really be hundreds of light-years apart.

Finding north with the Big Dipper

The Big Dipper (part of the constellation Ursa Major) is a easy-to-spot group of seven stars shaped like a ladle. The two stars forming the outer edge of its "cup" point almost straight toward Polaris, the North Star — which sits almost exactly above Earth's North Pole and barely seems to move all night.

Why the sky looks different through the year

As Earth travels around the Sun over a year, we face a different direction into space at night in December than we do in June. That's why constellations like Orion are easy to see on winter evenings but vanish behind the Sun's glare in summer — we're simply looking a different way.

Hands-on: find the Big Dipper and Polaris

Activity

On a clear night, away from bright lights if possible:

  1. Look toward the northern part of the sky for seven stars shaped like a ladle or saucepan — that's the Big Dipper.
  2. Find the two stars forming the outer edge of the "cup" (farthest from the handle).
  3. Draw an imaginary line through those two stars, extending it about five times their distance apart.
  4. That line lands you on Polaris, the North Star — you have just found true north without a compass!

Answer: Polaris marks north because it sits nearly above Earth's axis of spin.

Usually not. They just happen to appear near each other as seen from Earth, though they may be at wildly different real distances from us — the pattern is an illusion of our viewing angle.

Why does Polaris seem to stay in almost the same spot all night?

Because it lies almost directly above Earth's rotation axis. As Earth spins, every other star traces a circle around that fixed point in the sky — Polaris is close enough to the centre of that circle that it barely appears to move.

Why do different constellations show up in winter versus summer?

Because Earth is on the opposite side of its orbit around the Sun in winter compared to summer, so at night we're facing a completely different direction out into the galaxy — revealing different background stars.
