2. Day and Night

The spinning Earth

The Earth is shaped like a giant ball, and it is always slowly spinning, like a top, around an invisible line through its middle. One full spin takes about 24 hours — one whole day.

Only the half of Earth facing the Sun gets sunlight — that half has daytime. The other half, facing away, is in shadow — that half has nighttime. As the Earth keeps spinning, the half that was dark slowly turns to face the Sun, and day begins there too.

02 · Explanation

The Sun doesn't move — we do!

It looks like the Sun rises in the morning, crosses the sky, and sets at night. But the Sun is actually staying still (compared to Earth) the whole time — it is we who are moving, spinning along with the ground beneath our feet, so fast we don't feel it at all.

It's the same trick as riding on a playground roundabout: the trees around you seem to spin past, but really, you're the one spinning.

03 · Practical

Hands-on: the flashlight-and-ball demo

Activity

You will need a flashlight (the "Sun") and a ball, like a soccer ball or orange (the "Earth"). Do this in a dim room.

  1. Have a grown-up shine the flashlight steadily at the ball from one side.
  2. Notice only one side of the ball is lit — that side is having "daytime."
  3. Slowly turn the ball in your hands, like the Earth spinning.
  4. Watch each spot on the ball move from the lit side (day) into the dark side (night) and back again.

Answer: the flashlight (Sun) never moved — the ball (Earth) did all the turning, exactly like the real Earth.

Does the Sun really move across the sky?

Not really — it only looks that way. The Earth is spinning, carrying us around, so the Sun appears to travel across the sky even though it is Earth doing the moving.
