Sequence (time-series) chart
Plots one or more series in case order, optionally after a natural-log transform, differencing or seasonal differencing (as SPSS Sequence Charts), with a moving average and reference lines.
Menu: Graphs → More charts → Sequence chart (time series)…
When should I use it?
- Looking at trend and seasonality before modelling a time series.
What are the assumptions?
- Cases in time order, equally spaced.
How do I run it in StatLab?
- Choose the series and (optionally) a time label variable.
- Choose transformations if needed.
How do I read the output?
| Output | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Lines | Values (or transformed values) in time order. |
Worked example
On the practice survey dataset (File → Sample dataset), this command — which the dialog's Paste button also produces — runs the procedure:
PROC vizSequence /vars=(score age) /x='' /log=NO /diff=0 /sdiff=0 /refMean=NO.
Computed by StatLab's validated procedure code when this page was built. The example only illustrates the steps; choose variables that fit your own research question.
What are common mistakes?
- Plotting cases that are not sorted by time.
