High-low, range bar and difference area charts
Shows a high and a low value (and optionally a close) for each category or time point, as vertical lines, range bars or a shaded difference area.
Menu: Graphs → More charts → High-low / range bar chart…
When should I use it?
- Daily temperature ranges, price ranges, minimum and maximum scores.
What are the assumptions?
- Two numeric variables measured on the same scale.
How do I run it in StatLab?
- Choose the category/time variable, high and low, and the style.
How do I read the output?
| Output | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Lines / bars | From the low to the high value (category means when there are several cases). |
Worked example
On the practice survey dataset (File → Sample dataset), this command — which the dialog's Paste button also produces — runs the procedure:
PROC vizHighLow /x=group /y=score /y2=age /close='' /style=hlc.
Computed by StatLab's validated procedure code when this page was built. The example only illustrates the steps; choose variables that fit your own research question.
What are common mistakes?
- Plotting variables with different units on one axis.
